Weatherization

National Weatherization Program

staff member caulkingThe national Weatherization program was designed in the 1970s during the energy crisis, focusing on sealing windows and caulking. Additional funding was then provided for door installation, attic insulation, caulking and glazing windows, and window installation. Today’s program also uses computerized blower doors to detect all air leakages in the home and then calculates the most feasible and cost-effective repairs. It also focuses on health and safety concerns, such as installing carbon monoxide sensors and smoke detectors, and removing open flame heaters. Procedures recommended by the National Energy Audit Tool (NEAT) make houses more energy efficient by reducing energy usage, lowering utility bills, and making the house a more comfortable place to live.
